On this date in 1930, astronomer Clyde W. Tombaugh discovered Pluto. At the time of its discovery, Pluto was considered the ninth planet in the solar system. However, on Aug. 24, 2006, the International Astronomical Union changed the definition of a planet and downgraded Pluto to dwarf planet status.
